Second grade students recently started a large Peter and the Wolf unit. Peter and the Wolf is a Russian children's story written by Sergei Prokofiev in 1936. The story tells the tale of a boy named Peter and his encounter with a wolf who has eaten one of his animal friends. Prokofiev wrote Peter and the Wolf to help introduce young students to the instruments and families of the orchestra.

Each character in our story is represented by a musical theme. As the story is told by the narrator, these themes help to identify the characters that are part of the story.

As we become familiar with the story, students will be able to identify each character by hearing their theme. We will use finger puppets to act out the story and match our characters with each theme.
