2015-2016 Fall Newsletter

We are off to a great start this year! We have had a blast reviewing procedures and getting back into the groove. We have several new instruments, as well as exciting new projects coming down the pipe. I invite you to check back on the Music and Art websites frequently to see what we are up to!

Here is a wrap up of what's new. Be sure to click the link to view the whole article.

  • "Magic Mallets" Kindergarten, 1st grade (1M pictured), and 2nd grade have been busy using our new Orff instruments! One of our favorite activities is called "Magic Mallets." In this activity, students copy what they leader is doing with their mallets. We have so much fun playing this game, while also working on mallet technique, finding the best sound, and following a conductor!

  • Boom Boom Share a Drum The fifth and sixth graders have been working on an arrangement of Will Schmid's drum piece, Boom Boom Share a Drum. This activity requires the students to work together in partners and as a class. After learning the introduction, Section A, students were challenged to improvise their own solo measures for Section B. In the future, fifth grade students will create their own Section C. Here is a video of Mrs. Hanshew's 5th grade class and their performance of Boom Boom Share a Drum!

  • The End of Market Day We received news over the summer that Market Day was being dissolved effective immediately. Although a last-minute buyer came in and bought "part" of the company, they have chosen to eliminate the convenient grocery delivery service that Market Day provided. As you are aware, Market Day funds helped to provide our classroom with new instruments, technology, and other supplies, without asking families to purchase anything that they would not normally need. These funds helped to provide a 21st century music education for our students. In the 2014-2015 school year, Market Day sales provided over $2,000 for our classroom. What does this mean for LES Music? In the short term, this means that we are in search of ...

  • Panther Radio -- Coming Soon! We are so excited to be starting a new adventure at LeRoy Elementary School: a school radio station! Panther Radio will be a school-wide collaborative effort to share the amazing things that happen in our building each and every day. We hope that parents, students, and the community will tune in regularly to hear student-created content and music. More details will be available soon!

  • New Orff Instruments We have SEVEN new Orff instruments in our classroom this school year! The Orff Method of music instruction employs pitched and unpitched percussion in a variety of ways to teach musical concepts. Mr. Scott has his Level 1 Orff certification and loves the hands-on approach of this teaching style. The addition of these instruments brings our classroom to 20 barred instruments so that an entire class can play at the same time! The purchase of these instruments was made possible by the LeRoy Music Boosters fundraising efforts and donations received from the 2015 Spring Concert. Thank you for your support!

  • Welcome! Welcome to the new online home of LeRoy Elementary School Music! I hope that this page will grow to become a place for sharing some of the amazing things that happen every day in our music classroom!
